How to start a garden if you are an absolute beginner

With the right tools and some proper knowledge about gardening you can easily start a garden even if you are a complete amateur some essential steps which you need to take for starting your garden from scratch are

Determine your climate zone

A garden is just exactly like a real estate property; it must be at the right place at the right time. So the very first and basic step of gardening is to define the climate zone of your region and which plants are suitable for your climate zone. find the zone and then familiarise yourself with the fruits, vegetables, and flowers that can grow in your region.

After getting knowledge about your climate zone look for the first and last Frost dates so you know the duration of the growing season now you can go to your local gardening center and look for the plants if you are buying seeds then you can compare the number of days to maturity logged on the packet of seeds to give you the length of your maturing season

Decide what to grow.

After determining your climate zone and the plants which can grow in your region determine the plants which you want to grow you want to start a flower garden vegetable garden herb garden container garden or a combination of other several options ask yourself what kind of fruit and vegetables you like to eat and plant those also take into consideration the area of gardening if you have only a small gardening area then avoid gigantic plants

Use the sunlight

A very common mistake that most beginners make is missing sunlight. Pay attention to sunlight before choosing any spot in your yard for the garden. Most of the edible plants including many vegetable herbs and fruits need at least 6 hours of sunlight so look for an area that receives enough sunlight for sufficient time. Growing plants will also be easier on a flat piece of land that's near a structure that provides some wind cover.

Acquire basic gardening tools.

Like any other hobby starting gardening also requires you to invest in some tools which are essential such as a sturdy shovel and a pair of gloves in addition to that there are several other tools that you may need depending on the plants you want to grow and your soil such as if you want to grow plants in the pot you may need a potting soil scope and a standard kitchen knife to make the precise cut when your harvesting vegetables. Other tools such as battery-powered rechargeable drill Hori Hori knife-hand pruners and a small pruning saw can also be required depending on your garden

Test your soil

Testing soil before starting a garden is an essential step as it will also help to determine which type of plant will grow perfectly and if your soil is perfect for gardening or it needs modifications you can test your soil through any corporate extension service office. You can also perform this test at home by buying a soil tester that will determine the pH and other essential components which are necessary for growing a garden. Home bases soil test  is not that much trustworthy and can only give general information about nutrients and pH if you want to get extensive detail of your soil such as soil life, presence of toxic substances, hardness or softness of soli, and  quantity of moisture then you can take a soil sample to your near laboratory

Make your garden bed.

After getting your soil tested and determining your climate zone the very next step will be preparing your garden by clearing the existing vegetation and weeds. You can pull weeds by your hand but make sure that you pull them with roots so they don't resprout.

If you're starting with the lawn then you may need to borrow a sod cutter or buy one to remove the grass. Do not dig beneath the topsoil unless it is crucial because it will disturb the natural life which is not ideal. Once you clear the grass and remove the weeds then spread the heavy layer of compost on the growing area if your weeds are stubborn you can also try weed killers. Create a bed not more than 4 feet so you can easily get into the middle of the bed without stepping on other plants

Decide whether to grow from seed or transplant seedlings.

You may want to start from seeds because it will save you a lot of money but it is also a long process with a lot of bumps in the road like some seeds are persistent and doesn't sprout out easily while other take ages to develop into healthy plants which are ready for the brutal outdoor world

You can also  buy young plants from your local nursery as they are easy to take care of and  there are fewer potential hazards and difficulties in growing them

Planting seeds

For getting information about planting your seeds check the seed packet to see how deep you should plant the seeds in the soil some small ones can be sprinkled on the soil surface while larger seeds will need to be buried it's helpful to make up a divot in each pot to accommodate the seed after you have sown seed in the divot you can cover your seeds then.

Provide appropriate moisture to the newly planted seed with the appropriate quantity of water. To speed up the germination cover the pot with plastic wrap or a plastic dome this will help to keep the seed moist before they germinate when you see the first signs of greenery you can remove the cover

Check the water needs

Different plants have different water needs. Most of the plants during the growing season require about an inch of water per week while some may require more or less. Plant growth will be stunted if there hasn't been enough water therefore make sure that you are providing your plants with sufficient amounts of water. For checking whether your plants require to be watered or not stick your finger 2 inches deep into the soil if it feels dry then water it most of the plants show better growth  when the soil is  slightly dry than completely wet because too much water can lead to harmful root rot make your goal to water in such a quantity that it is not too much dry or soggy

Use mulch liberally.

For better growth of your plants you can cover the soil with rocks and organic matter so that weeds will have a hard time germinating and the earth is kept cool and moist other beneficial soil life also loves mulch as when it decays it will become food  for the soil food web just like compost

choose the right type of fertilizer for each crop such as wood chips are ideal for fruit trees shrubs and other large long live plants while vegetables require less wait mulch such as straw leaves

 Proper care of the garden

After all the steps the last step is to properly take care of your garden so that your efforts will not go to waste. There is a seasonal rhythm for garden maintenance like in spring you have to prevent weeds from regrowing, summer requires extra care in terms of keeping the garden moisture maintained.  In fall it is the time for cutting the fruit of your efforts and cleaning. Thus you have to pay attention throughout the year to your growing plants. In addition to that, also pay attention to your plant health. For example, a yellow or deformed leaf is a sign of infection or damage. You can clip such leaves off the plant. If the plant is collapsing under its weight you can support it with a stick tied to its stem overgrown vegetation may affect the growth of vegetation under it you can remove the vegetation if it is in a pot and keep it in a sunny place if not possible you can do careful pruning to open things up so that sunlight and fresh air can circulate
